“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all. Emily Dickinson
Such a beautiful sentiment. Can you picture that sublime bird perched in your soul, moving you along with its silent music? This is the whispered hope of all humans with a creative fire in their soul. You may doubt your talents or your ability to express yourself, but the hope, the drive to express yourself drives you on anyway.
Now in month four of this blog, so far I have written about four – out of my seven intentions – and created a link between my intentions and the chakras:
1. Home – Base chakra – Muladhara
2. Community – Sacral chakra – Svadisthana
3. Purpose – Solar Plexus chakra – Manipura
4. Vibrant health – Heart chakra – Anahata
It is time to move onto my fifth intention and the fifth chakra: abundance and the throat chakra. The Sanskrit name for the throat chakra, Vissudha, means purification.
The throat chakra carries the energies of truth, integrity, honesty, and communication. It also governs the ability to listen, both to the words of others and your own internal dialogue within your body.
This chakra governs your relationship with vibrations and resonance. It is from the throat centre that you produce sound through vibration. As such it is incredibly susceptible to vibrational energy, and responsive to resonance of all kinds. Music and sound can be used extremely effectively to balance this chakra.
“Sound is basic element of all creation,” says Johnathan Goldman, director of the Sound Healers Association.
In the ancient Egypt, Athens and Rome, for example, sound was understood to be the fundamental creative force of the universe. You find knowledge of this in the sacred texts of different traditions. For example, in the book of Genesis, it is written “And the Lord said ‘Let there be light’” and in the Gospel according to St. John, is the statement “In the Beginning was the word”- the creation of the universe occurring through sound.
Johnathan Goldman was influenced in his sound healing work by Dr. Alfred A. Tomatis, a French ear, nose, and throat doctor who used sound therapy to treat physical and psychological disorders. He treated people suffering from auditory processing problems, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, autism, and learning disorders, improving their communication and social behaviour through auditory stimulation.
His theory was that the symptoms of these disorders are not caused by the disorder itself, but by a sensory regulation problem that began in, what he considered, our most primordial sensory instrument, the inner ear.
Tomatis said that the inner ear, which receives sound vibrations, is fundamental to human development in the foetal stage. He believed that auditory stimulus triggers neurological development in the womb. Jonathan Goldman asserts that sound can stimulate the neural synapses and create new neural pathways.
Sound is a nutrient for the nervous system. Joshua Leeds
The fifth chakra is where your ideas and intentions, formed in your sixth and seventh chakra, are finally put out there into the world. Up until this point, and if it goes no further, your ideas are just fantasy. To bring intention into reality involves communication, the realm of the throat chakra.
Our throat chakra is a bridge between our inner and outer selves – who we feel we truly are, and how we represent ourselves in the world. Lisa Erickson
By the time you reach this chakra, you are operating at a mostly vibrational level. Although the chakra is based in the physical throat and affects physiological areas of the throat, the ears and the thyroid gland, the energy of this centre is large and subtle, and very, very blue.
The universe is made of stories, not of atoms. Muriel Rukeyser
Blue has always been my favourite colour. As I child I may have chosen blue to distance myself from pink and all things girly, but it resonates strongly with me as my true colour. Blue is the colour of the ocean, and of deep calm. Imagine your throat area bathed in blue light, right now.
The throat chakra governs creative expression, it is intricately connected with expression of all kinds and its free flow allows creativity to flow also.
An artist carries on throughout his life a mysterious, uninterrupted conversation with his public. Maurice Chevalier
As I have said before, I have wondered if my connection between my seven intentions and the seven chakras was a bit tenuous. It was rather a spontaneous idea at the time I wrote it. However, as I investigate further, I realize they are anything but tenuous connections. Call it intuition, divine inspiration or sheer dumb luck, but the throat chakra – which I married up to the intention of abundance – is apparently known as the “cornucopia centre”. Oh yeah baby!
There’s a treasure trove to be discovered and it’s inside you. Built into your DNA is humanity’s 10,000-plus years of telling and listening to oral stories. Peter Guber
For those of you not au fait with the mythology of the ancient Greeks, the cornu copiae – literally ‘horn of plenty’ – is an ancient symbol of nourishment and abundance, symbolized by a large horn-shaped container overflowing with produce, flowers, wealth and well, anything you fancy really. The story goes that baby Zeus (the Greek god) had to be hidden from his angry father Cronus – who had a tendency to devour everything in sight. He was stashed in a cave and attended to by some divine nursemaids, one of whom, Amalthea, happened to be a goat. While playing with her, Zeus accidently broke off one of her horns, which turned out to have divine power to provide unlimited nourishment and sustenance. Hence the horn of plenty.
Because we are storytelling creatures, the stories we take in become the basis for how we view ourselves and the world. Anodea Judith & Lion Goodman
As an interesting side note, the coat of arms from Victoria, Australia (where I was born) contains the image of a cornucopia symbolizing prosperity.
Usually, when we think of power, we think of external power. And we think of powerful people as those who have made it in the world. A powerful woman isn’t necessarily someone who has money, but we think of her as someone with a boldness or a spark that makes her manifest in a dramatic way. Marianne Williamson
Abundance, ask yourself what does it mean to you? For some people it represents money, success, and the trappings that go along with that, houses, cars, parties, travel. While that all sounds appealing in a way, my concept of abundance is more of an inside job. We have all heard of people who are miserable and lonely despite having material wealth, we know it doesn’t bring happiness and love.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. Marianne Williamson
Abundance to me is freedom from restriction, being in pure flow, allowing my gifts to be expressed in the world, and allowing the results of those gifts to flow freely to me and others. Yes, I know, it all sounds very vague. Let me break it down for y’all.
One definition of abundance is ‘overflowing fullness.’ You know the feeling, you are relaxing at a table surrounded by great people, great food, you’ve eaten, laughed, and then you sit back and just soak up that feeling, life is good. Imagine that feeling in ALL areas of your life, what would that look like to you?
The true sound of healing is Love. Sarah Benson
Abundance for me, would be a flow of money, love, support and resources that allowed me to do all the things I wish to. To pursue my writing, meditation, to learn ways of expressing myself freely and lovingly, to travel, to take care of my family, to be able to say ‘yes’ to things without fear of where the money is coming from. To have my own home and comfortable surrounds. To be able to share my bounty with people I love and the community locally and globally. It would mean loving without fear, expressing myself without fear, being creative without fear.
There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you. Maya Angelou
Creating intentions, at its core, is really about articulating our innermost truth. Instead of functioning day-to-day in survival mode, in jobs, relationships and living conditions we barely tolerate, it is the courage to say, out loud, “I wish for this.”
When a woman rises up in glory, her energy is magnetic and her sense of possibility contagious. Marianne Williamson
It is easy to dismiss this as wishful thinking, but the darker side is that when we don’t speak our truth, when we don’t vibrate at our true level, our body suffers from the discordance. Learning to speak your truth and then to live your truth is quite simply, a most profound act of self-love and healing.
So what are you waiting for? As John Lennon once said, this is NOT a dress rehearsal.
Now that you have created your intention and brought it through consciousness in the seventh chakra and vitalized your intention into a vision in the sixth chakra, it’s time to communicate your dream to others. The manifestation principle in the fifth chakra is conversation catalyzes. Although it is important to be clear about your vision and excited about its possibilities, now you must move it into the social world and speak about your vision effectively. The process of communication ignites sparks in others, who may get excited about your vision and offer help or advice. With feedback from others, your own clarity will be sharpened. Every time you communicate about your purpose and your dream, you get better at expressing what’s most important to you. Whether you are writing advertising copy or a business plan, creating a proposal, giving a talk, or holding a meeting, good communication skills will amplify your ability to create on purpose. Creating on Purpose, Anodea Judith & Lion Goodman
According to Anodea Judith & Lion Goodman, in Creating on Purpose, there are five steps to manifesting through this chakra:
- Telling your story
- Refining your mission through feedback
- Broadcasting your vision to others
- Setting goals to chart your course
- Turning inner voices into allies
The time is now to speak your truth and bring your truth into reality through expressing it. It is time to speak your truth to those around you, and to allow the flow of the universe to assist you in your intentions by gathering to you the people who can assist you in manifesting them.
As the throat chakra is concerned with authenticity and purification, it is helpful to remember the Buddhist precept of right speech. Ask yourself before you speak “Is it true, is it kind, is it necessary, is it the right time?”
The Humming breathing exercise is great to cleanse your thought and beliefs about spoken and written communication. Are you afraid of speaking up and stating your truth? Do you censor yourself to avoid hurting other people’s feelings? Do you speak harshly or judgementally to yourself or others?
The Humming Breath (courtesy of Natalie Southgate here)
Sit in a comfortable position with a straight spine. Begin by exhaling as much air as possible from your lungs before taking in a deep, slow breath through your nose, refilling your lungs. On your next exhalation, make a soft humming sound like a bee. When you run out of breath, take another deep inhalation, continuing the humming sound as you exhale. Begin with a few minutes practice, working up to 10-15 minutes at a time. When you have finished your humming breath practice, lie down and relax for a few minutes.

Everything is about resonance, and about how one vibration sets another vibration into motion. We are resonant beings. We are all made up of vibration, whether it’s animal, mineral, plant. It doesn’t matter. We are all moved by vibration, and the auditory vibration is one that is close enough to our nervous system. Joshua Leeds
Today’s affirmations on the throat chakra are from the CD Chakra Healing by Doreen Virtue:
I willingly release any blocks to perfect communication now.
I release all that would prevent me from lovingly speaking my truth today.
I allow my higher self to speak through me today in all my communications, and trust that all of my communications are perfectly ordered and guided. Today everyone with whom I come into contact benefits from listening to my words.
I allow my truth to be spoken and I am always heard.
I am able to speak to others clearly and eloquently.
I express my creativity and it flows effortlessly from me.
I speak my truth now.
Hope is the thing with feathers. Now is the time to sing the song of your soul.
